Recipe: Gamja Jorim (감자 조림)

Hello everyone!
I have tried a non-spicy Korean side dish in a Korean restaurant last month, called Gamja Jorim, which is Korean glazed potatoes.. You can click HERE if you have not read it yet!
It was so delicious and definitely one of my favorites, so I decided to do an 'experiment'
to cook this side dish, and today I am going to share the recipe to make my version of
Gamja Jorim to all of you~ ^^

Ingredients:
  • 20 baby potatoes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp gochugaru - korean red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp honey / corn syrup
  • Toasted sesame seeds
--------------------

Wash the baby potatoes and you can peel the potatoes if you want, but err I was too lazy.. so I skipped this step lol. But it is very important to cut out any blemishes on the potatoes!
And soak them in cold water for about 10 minutes.

And boil them over high heat for about 15 minutes until half-cooked. Drain them.

Add 2 tbsp of olive oil in a heated pan~

Add the boiled potatoes, saute them over medium-low heat and stir them occasionally until softened and slightly browned. Just carefully poke some of them with a fork or a chopstick to make sure they are completely done.

Add the soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, red pepper flakes (optional -- to make spicy version), and sugar to the pan. Stir it well.. Then add the water, and do not forget to taste it continuously until you get your desired taste, umm.. just feel free to add more or less like what I did lol.

When the sauce gets thickened, add honey / corn syrup and stir it well..
Once again.. do not forget to taste it! If you think it is too sweet for you, just add a little bit more soy sauce.

Turn off the heat, and actually I am supposed to sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on top, but unfortunately I have run out of sesame seeds at the time ugh >__<
Actually it tastes so much better with toasted sesame seeds, so do not forget to add sesame seeds when you make this Gamja Jorim, okay?!

And guess what, my dad told me that it tastes very similar, so I succeed to make this side dish on the first try though I just relied on my memory lol XD

And actually you can also use normal potatoes, but you have to peel and cut them into small pieces. So, I think it is much easier and faster to make this side dish with baby potatoes, right? And oh, pssst.. potato skin provides lots of good fiber, you know! kkk~

So, have you tried Gamja Jorim before?

Thanks for reading and have a lovely day ^^

See ya~

  11. Thanks so much for the recipe! This looks quick (besides the boiling part), which is just what I need sometimes! And baby potatoes sounds like a much better idea than big potatoes, haha. Plus, they're so cute!

I've never heard of this dish but I hope I can make something remotely as good-sounding when I try!
